Les H correspondent aux termes anglais « Head », « Heart », « Hands » et « Health » (la tête, le coeur, les mains, la santé).

On considère généralement que l'expression 4-H est inspirée d'une strophe du poème « The Children's Song » de Rudyard Kipling.
